History of Mount Tabor Neighborhood

Mount Tabor is a neighborhood in Southeast Portland. It is known for its beautiful and picturesque views of the city. Mount Tabor was one of several hills leveled down to fill in the Willamette River, creating more land areas where homes could be built upon it. Earlier residents consisted mainly of loggers and fishermen. Later, Mount Tabor was primarily a farming community, and market gardeners lived along the main roads of SE Division and Hawthorne Boulevard. The homes built in this area were mainly modest cottages constructed for those working as laborers or craftsmen on nearby commercial fishing vessels or with Portland’s many railroads, warehouses, wholesale houses, and factories which stretched south to downtown Portland from City Park (now known as Washington Park).

The Mount Tabor neighborhood Association was formed in 1959, and the first community newsletter, The Tabor Times, was published in 1960. In 1962 a group of residents got together to form the Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Crime Watch, which is still active today. One of the main goals of this organization is to keep communication open between our neighbors and the Portland Police Bureau’s East Precinct.

In 1971, the land east of SE 60th Ave., south of Division St., and west of Hawthorne Blvd. was annexed into the City of Portland, with most homes being built between 1978-1982 as part of Mayor Neil Goldschmidt’s “Homes for all” campaign pledge during his run for office. Today, Mount Tabor is a trendy residential neighborhood with a high percentage of owner-occupied homes compared to other Portland neighborhoods. It is one of the only areas in all of Portland where home prices have increased over the last year while most other parts of town continue to suffer from double-digit declines or stagnation.
