History of Puyallup, WA

Puyallup, Washington, is rich with a history dating back to the 1800s. The Native Americans in this area were known as Puget Sound Indians and made up of nine tribes, including the Puyallup Tribe. In 1833, Stephen R. Swinburne was brought in by an Indian tribe called Nisqually as a missionary. He was the first white settler in Puyallup and established his farm on land now part of Heritage Park. Swinburne became famous for planting potatoes, beans, peas, onions, cucumbers, and various fruits like pears and apples; these were not yet grown by European settlers in the Puget Sound area. 

It was not until after 1856 that immigrants started to move into this region of Washington State more widely, including one family by the name of Cheney who came from Illinois and would end up settling in Puyallup. The town itself was established on March 14th, 1888, establishing a post office. In 1891, the town was home to a disastrous fire that destroyed much of Puyallup's downtown area and resulted in several deaths from suffocation due to smoke inhalation. The city would rebuild itself within two years.

Puyallup has an estimated population of over 70,000 today, roughly a third larger than it was in the 1970s. It is home to over 60 parks and serves as a popular place for those looking to make their homes away from big cities but still want easy access via a road or public transportation.
