History of Alberta Arts District

The Alberta Arts District was first settled in the early 1900s. At that time, the area was mostly farmland and forest. A small number of homes were built in the district, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that things started to change. That’s when a new freeway (I-405) was built, making the area more accessible.

In 1971, artist Tom Fishburne moved into a warehouse in the district and started painting murals on its walls. This began to attract other artists to the area, and soon it became known as an arts district. In 1978, the city officially recognized Alberta Arts District as an official neighborhood.

Since then, the district has continued to grow and attract new artists, businesses, and residents. Today, it’s a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood with a rich history and culture.
