The Parkrose neighborhood is located in the northeastern part of Portland, Oregon. It was once farmland that belonged to a family named Montgomery. The area was then named after this family when it became an official community in 1905. Although there are different theories for how Parkrose got its current name, some say it may have been due to being close to the park on one side and on another, Rose City Golf Course, which eventually closed down later on during WWII because so many soldiers were sent off overseas where they weren’t able to play golf as often anymore. There’s also speculation that “Park” from being next to a park and “Rose” from being adjacent with Rose City Golf Course came about to give us our namesake today.

 

The development of Parkrose didn’t start to take off until the 1940s when Vanport, Oregon, was destroyed by a flood. Many residents from Vanport ended up moving into Parkrose, and it began to increase from there. New businesses started popping up, and the community became more tightly knit. Unfortunately, during WWII, many soldiers were sent overseas, and as a result, Rose City Golf Course closed down. After the war ended, though, things slowly started to get back on track and continue developing in Parkrose.
