Eastbank Esplanade is a fun and unique place to go for those who like to bike, rollerblade, jog or merely want to take in the sights of Portland from the river. The Eastbank Esplanade is located on the Willamette River, which runs through downtown Portland. This location is such a popular attraction that many never venture away from it (this is perfectly understandable, as there are so many great things to see). However, it would be a shame to drive out here and not attempt to see some of Portland beyond the Esplanade.
You can park in one of many garages in downtown Portland or on any number of streets that border the freeway. If you plan to spend most of your day on the Esplanade, it might be worth it to pay for a full day of parking.
When you get out onto the Esplanade, you will find two significant paths: one that runs alongside street traffic and one that runs in the middle of the path that is not frequented by cars. You can choose which path to go down, but I would advise taking the one near street traffic. Regardless of which path you take, it will be easy to stay on the Esplanade because bright blue lines are painted onto the ground to make sure walkers do not wander off of it.
Along this path, you will find several points of interest. The first point of interest is a stunning view of the downtown Portland skyline. Next to this is a giant glass sculpture reflecting light off the water and changing color with the shifting sky. Several walking/bike trails branch out from the Eastbank Esplanade and lead into park areas, neighborhoods, or green spaces.
The Eastbank Esplanade is a trendy area, especially on beautiful days. People are biking, jogging, and rollerblading along the trail around the clock. From the Eastside: Take I-84 west towards Portland. Take exit 19C toward US-30 W/St Helens Rd, then merge onto N Interstate Ave. Follow signs for Lloyd Center/I-84 BUS W/US-30 W and merge onto N Interstate Ave/OR-99E/US-30W. Turn left onto NE Multnomah St and turn right onto the Eastbank Esplanade.
From Downtown: Take I-405 north towards Portland and exit 1B for I-5 toward Vancouver. Merge onto I-5 N and exit 302 toward US-30 W/St Helens Rd/OR-99E. Turn right onto NE Columbia Blvd, turn left onto N Denver Ave, and turn right onto N Interstate Ave. Take the 2nd left to stay on N Interstate Ave/OR-99E/US-30W and turn right onto the Eastbank Esplanade.
From the Westside: Take US-26 E toward Portland and exit 4 for I-5 S towards Salem. Take exit 302A to stay on I-5 S and merge onto OR-99E/US-30W, turn right onto NE Columbia Blvd followed by a left onto N Denver Ave and then a right onto N Interstate Ave. Follow the Eastbank Esplanade from there.
