History of Linnton Neighborhood
The Linnton neighborhood is located in the North Portland area of Portland, Oregon. It was initially named St. Johns when it was settled by Henry Wadsworth around 1866; however, he renamed it after John Lewis Cochran (who later became known as “Uncle Johnny”), who bought land in this town and helped to develop it with his brother William S. Cochran in 1870-1874. The city name has been changed several times due to postal difficulties, but today it is simply “Linnton.”
Many buildings date back from 1910 through 1930, which were built when lumber manufacturing flourished here thanks to its location on both sides of Forest Park Boulevard for easy access to the St. Johns Bridge and rail lines that were built in 1906.
The community has a total area of about five square miles which are filled with homes, parks, natural areas as well other small businesses, including restaurants and stores; however, it does not have any large business districts or retail outlets within its boundaries, making Linnton considered an enclave for local commerce instead.
