History Kerns Neighborhood
Kerns, located in northeast Portland, is one of the older neighborhoods in the city. It was platted out in 1889 and initially named Eastmoreland after a suburb of London. The name was changed to Kerns in honor of Colonel James P. Kerns. They had been instrumental in bringing the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company (later acquired by Union Pacific) line through the area.
At first, the development came slowly to Kerns but picked up steam around the turn of the century as streetcar lines were extended into the neighborhood. Industry followed suit, with several factories located along NE Sandy Boulevard (which bisects Kerns north to south). A few grand homes were also built during this period, most notably the Edwin K. Fox House (now the offices of Meyer Memorial Trust).
In more recent years, Kerns has become one of Portland’s most desirable neighborhoods in which to live. This is partly due to its proximity to downtown and other popular areas like Lloyd Center and Hawthorne Boulevard. It is also because of its mix of old-world charm and modern amenities. There are several excellent restaurants, bars, and shops located within the neighborhood boundaries and various parks and green spaces for residents to enjoy.
