History of Laurelhurst Park

Laurelhurst Park was originally part of the estate of Henry Villard, who was an American journalist and financier. The park is named after his wife, Mary (Miriam) Laurelhurst. It is located in Portland’sPortland’s southeast quadrant off to the east side of I-219, known as SE Division Street between Bybee Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard. The parkland was acquired by the City of Portland in 1906 from the estate of Villard’sVillard’s widow and son after Henry Villard’sVillard’s death in 1900.

Mrs. Laurelhurst hired the Olmsted Brothers design firm to landscape the property, which consisted of a large pond, meadows, and woodlands. The Olmsted Brothers also designed Mt. Tabor and Washington Park in Portland and Seattle.

The original plans for Laurelhurst Park called for a large playground, wading pool, bandstand, and picnic areas. However, many of these features were never built due to a lack of funding. A small play area was eventually constructed in the park’s northeast corner.

In 2009, a $P restoration project was completed, including restoring the pond and its banks, constructing new pathways and bridges, installing new fencing and signage, and planting over 900 trees and shrubs.

What Not to Do at Laurelhurst Park

Do not litter

Dogs are allowed on leash only. They must be kept under control at all times. Dog waste should be cleaned up immediately, using the bag dispensers throughout the park.

Cycling is permitted in Laurelhurst Park, but please remember to follow park rules and regulations when doing so! Bikes may use paths but not the lawn.

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, fishing is permitted ONLY (from sunrise to 11 AM) within the pond. Before heading out to fish, a fishing permit must be obtained at any Portland Parks & Recreation community center! Please respect park rules while fishing, including catch limits on certain fish species. An adult must accompany minors under 16 years old, and only one pole per person is allowed.

Do not feed the geese! If you enjoy feeding animals, it’s best to do so in moderation. Geese can become aggressive if they are overfed or feel threatened. Overfeeding them also contributes to excess waste that pollutes waterways and harms wildlife.

Powell Butte

History of Powell Butte

The Multnomah County Land Company initially owned the land that now forms Powell Butte. In 1867, a group of settlers from Iowa arrived and claimed 640 acres of it for farming purposes.

In 1909 an electric trolley service began between Portland city center and Gresham on the eastern edge of town. The Powell Butte stop was added in 1912. The area around the butte began to be developed as a recreational destination.

South Waterfront Lower Tram Terminal

The South Waterfront is a neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. It spans from the Willamette River to SW Moody Avenue and SW River Parkway to NW Naito Parkway.

For example, The Portland Aerial Tram is an excellent place for a fun ride, but it doesn’t offer any observation deck or outdoor area where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Therefore, if your goal is to take pictures from above, you might be better off looking for other options.

The Tram also doesn’t offer any food or drinks, so bringing your own is recommended! The Tram does feature a small cafe that sells snacks and beverages, but the prices are significantly higher than what you’ll find elsewhere in Portland. If you’re visiting OHSU, it’s probably best to plan your visit around eating lunch or dinner at the hospital.

Another thing to be aware of is that parking can be difficult in this area, so arriving by foot or bike might be your best bet. A few paid parking lots are available, but they can fill up quickly, so arrive early if you’re planning on driving!
