Facts about the Sunset Hill Neighborhood

 

The story behind why people love it so much today starts back before “Seattle” was even a city. In the early 1800s, Sunset Hill was home to Duwamish Indians who lived off its natural resources in cluding fishing and berries and from trading with other Indian tribes through what is now referred to as present-day Ballard or Interbay. Then in 1851, the first white settler arrived on land ceded by Chief Seattle just five years earlier when he signed over his people’s rights for their new lives on reservations. It became known simply as “The Highlands” because of its high elevation compared to downtown Seattle or Elliott Bay, which were also known at that time as “lowlands” due to being inundated by water during certain tides!
