The history of Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma, WA, began when it was built on a former coal mine and sand quarry. The original vision for the course was the late Robert Morris Jr., a Tacoma native, and golf enthusiast. In 2001, Washington State decided to redevelop land mined for sand and gravel over 60 years as a public park with “signature” features, including a championship-level links-style golf course.
The first phase of construction occurred from 2004 through 2008, which included grading fairways and greens on what would become five holes along the Puget Sound waterfront. The second major step in Chambers Bay Golf Course history began when Peter Jacobsen was hired as lead architect to complete the project after Bob Cupp left due to conflicts with Seattle District Council labor unions regarding work standards at the site. The final plan called for 18 holes, but only nine were completed by 2011 since the city of Tacoma was unable to obtain its desired PGA Tour event.
