History of Mary S. Young Park

Mary S. Young Park was named after a former Portland City Commissioner in the 1970’s, who also served on the South Waterfront Planning Committee. The park is located near downtown Portland right next to Interstate 405, and it covers an area of 15 acres. The park is exactly five minutes away from Portland State University. It also has some commercial buildings nearby. A few apartment complexes are considered part of the South Waterfront neighborhood, built over time until 2010 when this area became fully developed.

What to See in Mary S. Young Park

-Parking lot. There is a small parking lot at the park, but it can fill up quickly on busy days. There is also street parking available.

-Playground. There is a large playground in the park with something for kids of all ages to enjoy.

-Basketball courts. If you’re feeling active, there are two basketball courts where you can shoot some hoops.

-Tennis courts. If you’d rather hit a ball with a racket, two tennis courts are available for use.

-Boat rentals. You can also rent boats at the park if you want to spend some time on the water! There’s even an area where you can fish without bringing your equipment.

-Walking trails. Walking trails around the park can take you through a forest or alongside a pond for those who want to stretch their legs. These paths may be pretty muddy and wet at times, so make sure you wear shoes with good traction!

– Hiking Trails: If you are looking for a peaceful hike, the park has two trails that loop around. The red trail is about a mile long and takes you through the forest and by the pond. If you want something a little longer, the green trail is just over three miles and will take you to some of the highest points in the park.

– Dog park: The park also has a separate dog park for all four-legged visitors to play in.

-Pond. A large pond in the park is excellent for fishing or just taking in the view. Be careful, though – there are sometimes ducks and geese near the edge of the water that may attack if they feel threatened.

-Concession stand. If you get hungry while you’re in the park, there is a concession stand where you can buy food and drinks.

-Restrooms. There are restrooms available in the park if you need to use them.

– Picnic tables: There are plenty of picnic benches for picnicking. You can also bring your picnic blanket if you want an even more comfortable spot to sit while eating lunch or dinner.

– Grills: There are also grills available if you want to cook out with your friends and family.

Open fields for playing sports or flying a kite: Two open areas in the park are great for throwing around a Frisbee, kicking around a soccer ball, or just running freely. The grass is also very soft, making it an ideal spot to lay down when you’re feeling tired.

Portable restrooms: If the bathroom in the park is complete or you don’t want to use it, portable restrooms are also available.

– Basketball court/soccer field (depending on the time of year): There is a basketball court and a soccer field at the park, but they are both located in different areas, so make sure to check out the map before you go.

– Trails through the forest: Some trails take you through the forest if you want to get away from all the other people in the park. These trails can be pretty muddy, so make sure to wear shoes that won’t cause you to slip.

There are plenty of things to do in the park, so you’re sure to find something that interests you.

What to Bring in Mary S. Young Park

Bring your picnic supplies (food, drinks, utensils) if you plan on staying for a while. Or bring money to buy from the small concession stand there during certain hours! Pack a blanket or low-profile folding chair, too – it’s nice to have options depending on how long you want to stay and what kind of seating you prefer.

-Sunscreen and sunglasses for sunny days (and hats if it’s especially warm) -Don’t forget the bug spray! Especially in summer, mosquitos can carry West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease (although both are rare to contract). Be safe and take precautions before heading outside without insect repellant.

-Jacket -Portland weather is unpredictable, and it’s good to be prepared for anything! Bring clothes that you can layer to stay comfortable at any temperature.

-Extra socks if walking around barefoot or in water shoes (optional) -You might get your feet wet at Mary S Young Park, and it’s always nice to have a fresh pair of socks for when you leave.

-Camera or phone -You might want to take photos or video at the park, and having your smartphone with you is probably more convenient than lugging along a camera. Plus, there may be photo opportunities that don’t involve bringing something extra.

-A good book or some other form of entertainment -It’s always nice to have something to do when you want a break from the sun (or the bugs). If you brought a picnic lunch, this is a great time to eat it!

-Frisbee, ball, kite -If you feel like being active, these items can provide hours of entertainment. Be aware that not all park areas are ideal for playing games or flying kites, so check before you start.

These are just a few things to consider packing if you’re going to Mary S. Young Park – it depends on what you want to do while you’re there!
