Elk Rock Garden is a public park and botanical garden in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The garden occupies an area of 16 acres (65,000 m²) on a hill overlooking Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. The garden is located at S.E. Bybee Boulevard and 14th Avenue near Oaks Park on the Willamette River in southeast Portland, Oregon (United States).
History of Elk Rock Garden
Elk Rock Garden was designed by John Olmsted, one of the most famous landscape architects in America and the son of Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed New York City’s, Central Park. The garden was opened to the public in 1905.
The garden is a beautiful example of the naturalistic style of gardening that was popular in the early 20th century. In this style, plants mimic natural ecosystems and provide a feeling of being in nature without sacrificing an aesthetically pleasing environment.
In 1927 the garden was acquired by Portland Parks & Recreation from Joslyn’s estate after he died at age 83. However, it served as a salvage depot during World War II, and the gardens were neglected. In 1978, a restoration project began and was completed in 1982.
In 1990, an amphitheater was built in the garden as part of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial celebration. This amphitheater is used for concerts and other events throughout the year.
The garden is currently undergoing a $400,000 restoration project to restore the amphitheater and paths to their historic condition. It has recently reopened.
Features of Elk Rock Garden
The garden provides opportunities to see plants that grow in the wild. The plants are arranged in informal groupings rather than formal beds, and winding paths lead visitors through meadows, around ponds, and over small bridges.
The garden is noted for its outstanding collection of rhododendrons which bloom in profusion during May when other trees and shrubs also come into bloom.
The garden also features a waterfall, meadow, and stream, which are home to many species of birds. There is an amphitheater with seating for 200 people where concerts are held during the summer months. The Portland Rose Festival Queen makes her “Queen’s Walk” down Bybee Boulevard to Oaks Park at Elk Rock Garden every year on the first Saturday in June.
The garden is open year-round to hikers, joggers, and bikers who want a quiet place to relax away from the city’s noise below. The park has several picnic tables available on a first-come-first-served basis. There are no restroom facilities at Elk Rock Garden, so visitors must plan accordingly.
