History of Surprise Lake

Surprise Lake has a fascinating history, which dates back to the early 1900s when Tacoma, Washington started becoming industrialized and actively mined for coal in its surrounding regions. During excavations of Mount Hope’s nearby neighborhood, workers found vast amounts of coal deposits at The Hilltop Mine. This sparked great excitement as it quickly became evident that there were much more significant than average deposits here, so much so that they began digging up more dirt than usual with hopes of finding even more valuable seams of black gold deep underground.

Eventually, their machines dug about 100 feet deep into the earth before reaching the planned depth, but what they discovered instead shocked everyone involved: water! It turned out not only that there were far more coal deposits than expected, but the water was coming from a massive underground lake which they had breached.

As you can imagine, word of this got out, and people quickly began to speculate about what might be down in that deep dirty wet hole: some thought it could have been an ancient sea. In contrast, others guessed that even dinosaurs or other long-lost creatures might remain hidden away beneath The Hilltop Mine. 

However, before too long, Tacoma city officials pushed for exploratory drilling using only two diamond drill bits produced by General Electric during World War II. At 1000 feet, it became apparent that much deeper digging would still be required before helpful anything could be found, so eventually, all work stopped on The Surprise Lake.

As of 2017, it remains unknown just how deep the Lake goes. However, after all this time, there is still a constant flow of water from the subsurface feeding into The Surprise Lake at about 300 gallons per minute, suggesting that its source may be more significant than initially thought.

Today the area is maintained by Tacoma City Light. They have taken responsibility for promoting outdoor activities in the region, including hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, and bird watching, with over 280 species recorded so far. In addition to being an important refuge for salmon, which migrate up nearby Kelly’s creek beginning each fall, biologists have observed otters living here as well, making it perhaps one of only two places on earth where these animals can be found outside of coastal regions. It turns out that, surprisingly enough, even a large amount of Japanese carp have been found here as well, a species native to Asia where they are considered a delicacy.

The attraction includes vintage works of art, Coca Cola machines from all over the world, historic neon signs, family heirlooms dating back to 1892 when Henry Le May arrived in Washington Territory to settle in Montana. Visitors can shop for antiques or admire this unique display that spans more than four decades!

You will also find old gas pumps and some rare books with original artwork created by famous artists, including Norman Rockwell. The highlight is seeing these legendary automobiles up close, which are displayed throughout the showroom. One of the most impressive pieces is a 1931 Duesenberg Model J W LeMay Special Roadster restored and customized by Harold LeMay himself!

The Tacoma Historical Society was founded in 1891. The non-profit organization works to promote, preserve and educate about the history of Tacoma. Funded by donations from individuals, businesses, foundations, and grants, they can offer some free programs that help share their mission with both adults and students throughout Pierce County.

Their headquarters is located on Broadway at the corner of 11th Avenue where visitors can explore historical photographs, maps, paintings, and other artifacts, including a desk once owned by Chief Seattle’s daughter, which recently sold for 11 million dollars!

They also run the Eliza Hart Parker House Museum dedicated to an early pioneer woman who helped establish schools along Puget Sound during her lifetime (1839 – 1927). 

When visiting the museum, guests can see the inside of her Victorian Gothic home in downtown Tacoma including an open parlor and kitchen. They also offer self-guided tours through Old Town, where visitors will discover historic buildings like Union Station (1907), designed by New York’s famous architect; McKim Mead & White.

It was once the main stop for visitors arriving in Tacoma via Amtrak and is where travelers can still purchase tickets to ride. The John Olsen Research Library is located in the museum’s backroom and contains over 50,000 books for visitors interested in genealogy or history research.

– A replica of the Wright brothers’ Model B airplane that was shipped in pieces to Tacoma assembled here and then famously piloted by Roy Olmstead when he became the first man ever to fly an aircraft in Washington state.

– Artifacts from local Native American tribes, including masks dating back hundreds of years, tools used in fishing, clothing, and implements for cooking.

– A replica of a pioneer log cabin constructed by the Log Cabin Heritage Association in Tacoma. The house is furnished with period pieces, and visitors can tour it with or without a guide.
