The site of the world’s most extreme bridges is a park in Tacoma, Washington. Bordered by water on one side and mountains on the other, this park has been home to some of the most daring feats in bridge engineering. Spanning over 1 mile long with only two feet separating traffic from Puget Sound below, these are not your average bridges! They’re so scary that engineers had to invent a new word for them: “suspension,” meaning an object hangs between supports.

Tacoma Narrows Park is home to two bridges: The North and South Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Also known as “Galloping Gertie,” a suspension bridge with steel towers, wire cables strung between them, and concrete decking for traffic. This is where engineers’ nightmare began; on November 7, 1940, at about ten in the morning, one truck passing over caused quite a scare! As it crossed from side to side on a windy day, one of its sides went up while the other sagged down until the whole thing just broke apart into pieces that fell into Puget Sound below. That’s right, it collapsed! It only lasted four months before collapsing because there wasn’t any support underneath the bridge.

The park has been rebuilt into a state park where today people can come check out their new visitor center location with exhibits on how Tacoma Narrow Bridge collapsed.
