History of Tualatin Hills Nature Park
The history of Tualatin Hills Nature Park began in the 1960s when developers were looking for ways to increase the value of their properties. At that time, most people wanted a perfect lawn and few shrubs or trees on their land. To plant larger vegetation was an expense many could not afford at the time. The developer decided they would give people a chance to plant larger vegetation at no cost. They would pay for the plants themselves and then sell them once they were fully grown. The problem with this idea was that few wanted to wait years until their new trees or bushes grew tall enough, so some developers decided on another option: donating all of the saplings to the county for use in a new park. This is how Tualatin Hills Nature Park came to be.
In 1967, the first 122 acres of Tualatin Hills Nature Park were donated to Washington County by developers. The land was primarily forested and contained creeks, wetlands, and wildlife. Over the years, more land was donated, including a farm in 1979 that contained beautiful meadows and wildlife. In the early 1990s, Tualatin Hills Nature Park expanded to include more than 500 acres of land.
