History of Edmonds, Washington

Edmonds, Seattle, WA is the perfect location to explore all Western Washington offers. With a rich history and an ever-changing landscape, Edmonds offers incredible activities year-round. In addition, there are many historic buildings in town that have been preserved for passing on their stories from generation to generation. The first known inhabitants were Native Americans who lived off fishing in Lake Washington. Their oral history tells us they have been there since "time out of mind" occupied by Squak, Sammamish, and Duwamish Tribes.

The first European settlers arrived in Edmonds, Seattle, WA, after George Vancouver claimed Puget Sound for Great Britain and the Hudsons Bay Company opened a trading post at Fort Nisqually near Tacoma, Washington.

In 1851, Thomas Mercer proposed building a town on what was then called "Squak Slough" and offered to bring the North West Trading Company there. The rest of the settlers followed his suggestion after a slough opened between two saltwater bays where they gathered oysters, clams, crabs, and other seafood. This area was later named "Edmonds" for Edward Galland Otis (founder of E. G. Otis Elevator Company).

Later on, Edmonds and its surroundings became a popular location for Chinese immigrants to come as they found work in the coal mines. However, antiChinese sentiment started growing during those times, so some moved south of present-day Seattle, where small towns such as Renton thrived.

In 1883, Thomas Burke and James Commons, founders of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, built a summer cabin near Iverson's Cove. That same year Edward Lander also built his house there while Charles Simonyi settled in Edmonds with his family building their further home north, where they ran a general store for 30 years until it burnt down in 1917.

It wasn't until Seattle's first streetcar in 1884 that Edmonds became a town. It was then that James Clise, one of Seattle's leading developers, began building up the waterfront with wharves to accommodate steamboats bringing supplies for his new properties.

Since its inception, many events have shaped what this town is today. For example, in 1910, a large fire destroyed half of the town. Still, it was later rebuilt. By 1913 had its first bank and newspaper: The Edmonds Beacon, which was published until 1955 when all local newspapers were consolidated into one publication called the Puget Sound Mirror.

In 1917 another fire burnt down over three blocks of businesses on Main Street, but the community banded together to rebuild it for better.

As far as transportation is concerned, in 1910, an auto ferry began running between Edmonds and Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula, which was later replaced by a bridge linking them both north and southbound lanes in 1929. It wasn't until 1940 that another bridge opened eastbound, connecting it to the city of Lynnwood.

Of course, it wasn't all smooth sailing for this town as WWII created challenges too. The local economy was affected due to labor shortages and war rationing. Still, things eventually got back on track after 1945 when Edmonds became home to many returning veterans who wanted their families close by while attending college at local universities such as Everett and Seattle.

In the 1960s, new high schools were opened to accommodate more students, which included Edmonds Woodway High School (1965), Meadowdale High School (1966), and Lynnwood High School (1967). Soon after that, in 1973, a fourth junior high school was built: Alderwood Junior High followed by Mountlake Terrace Junior High in 1974.

The 1970s also marked the launch of many other events which would forever change this town. For example, Edmonds City Hall was built in 1975, while Harry's Hardware celebrated its 100th anniversary that same year, too, to name a few!

By 1980, new businesses were popping up everywhere. For example, the city became a popular hot spot for tourists and retirees to visit, which led to many new hotels opening, such as Best Western (1980), Holiday Inn Express (1983), and Hampton Inn by Hilton in 1984. That same year also saw the construction of Edmonds City Park with its Olympic-sized swimming pool, two tennis courts, two soccer fields, and four baseball diamonds.

The new century brought many changes too, including the construction of a skate park which was built in 2005 while Edmonds began hosting more than just its famous annual fair that same year: it now includes festivals such as Arts & Wine Festival (2000), Seafair Cup Hydroplane Races (2004) and the famous Pumpkin Festival (2006).

Today, Edmonds has become a city of diversity. It is home to many different ethnic groups and cultures who have come together in the spirit of community resulting in a strong sense of pride for this town!
