History of Montavilla Neighborhood
Montavilla is a neighborhood in the NE section of Portland, Oregon. The boundaries are Powell Boulevard to the west, I-84 to the north, 122nd Avenue to the east, and SE Stark Street to the south. Montavilla was platted in 1887 by C.C. Moore and H.M. Smith and originally named Mt. Tabor Heights after Mount Tabor, located just east of downtown Portland. In 1905, the name was changed to Montavilla, derived from two French words: “mont” meaning mountain and “Vieille” meaning old or aged village.
The first residents of Montavilla were drawn here because its elevated location provided views of Mount Hood, the Columbia River, and downtown Portland. Many of the homes built in Montavilla were duplexes or triplexes that housed many working-class families and young couples. Montavilla was annexed to the city of Portland in 1948 and experienced a period of decline after WWII as its residents became more affluent and moved out.
After years of neglect, Montavilla is now experiencing revitalization, with home values rising since 2000. The neighborhood has an artsy vibe due to its proximity to famous SE Stark Street, which hosts art galleries, microbreweries, restaurants, cafés, and shops. People who are attracted to Montavilla’s vintage homes and revitalized business district enjoy the walkability of this neighborhood.
