History of Humboldt Neighborhood
The Humboldt neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, is located in the city’s Northeast section. The boundaries are MLK Jr. Boulevard to the north, Interstate 84 to the east, NE Prescott Street to the south, and NE 15th Avenue to the west. It was annexed by the City of Portland in 1891 from Multnomah County.
The area known as Humboldt was first settled in 1847 when John W. Yeon built a cabin on his land claim at what is now NE 13th and Prescott streets. Another early settler in the area was Capt. William Overton arrived in 1849 and claimed 640 acres extending from present-day Martin Luther King Jr Blvd north to Union Ave and NE Fremont St west to the Willamette River. Overton’s claim was known as “The Clearing” because of all the fir trees he cut down to build his cabin.
