The area was once home to Native Americans, who used the land for fishing. Until 1848, European settlers started moving into the region and established farms there. Around 1899 when St Johns Bridge opened, it helped with population growth in North Portland by connecting residents with downtown. People began living on top of one another in small apartments where they would be charged high rent prices due to their proximity to work and transportation routes. In 1908 housing development changed from wood frame homes made out of standard-sized lumber plans. They began to build larger, more expensive homes and had character. The new residents of Cathedral Park started to demand paved streets, sidewalks, and street lights which the city began installing in 1912. A streetcar line was also established on North Lombard Avenue in 1913.

The neighborhood continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s as people were attracted to the area’s natural beauty and affordable housing prices. During World War II, many shipbuilders and other industrial workers moved into the neighborhood since it was close to their workplaces. After the war ended, many veterans chose to settle in Cathedral Park due to its affordability and convenient location.
