Once known as Mount Tabor, the area changed its name when it became an official part of Portland in 1891. In 1910 it became one of two “playgrounds” for blacks living on the East Side because none were elsewhere. Others moved from Albina due to restrictive covenants that kept them out of other neighborhoods across town where minorities lived. By 1920 African Americans made up more than fifty percent of people living within its borders, with many coming from Kentucky, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The neighborhood was also home to a sizable Japanese American community until they were forcibly removed and incarcerated.
The Brentwood-Darlington Neighborhood Association (BDNA) was formed in 1969 as residents mobilized to fight freeway expansion, which would have resulted in the demolition of hundreds of homes. The BDNA is still active today, working on preserving historic resources, promoting economic development, increasing access to healthy food, and improving livability for all residents. In 2007 the area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its significant role in Portland’s African American history. Brentwood-Darlington has seen recent gentrification, with many long-time residents being displaced.
