Columbia East is a quaint neighborhood in Portland, Oregon’s best-kept secret for years. The neighborhood offers a mix of old and new homes for everyone. The people in Columbia East are amiable and welcoming to newcomers. With its proximity to downtown and all the amenities one would need, this small but mighty area is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after areas of town!

Some of the highlights of Columbia East include:

History of East Columbia Neighborhood

The East Columbia neighborhood is located in the southeast area of Portland, Oregon. This historical district was initially developed during World War I through the 1930s. The original construction techniques are still evident today, with many homes built using cinder blocks and hand-laid bricks. These old brick neighborhoods were once considered outlying rural areas, but now they have turned into a vibrant community within proximity to downtown Portland attractions. There are also schools nearby, including Lewis Elementary School, and other local amenities such as grocery stores, shops, restaurants, and cafes that make this an ideal place for both families or retirees looking to settle down in their own cozy historic home; away from it all!

Now, the homes in this district are quite varied, featuring both English and Tudor Revival styles and American Craftsman bungalows. The architecture of these homes is something to see, and they often come complete with beautiful gardens in the front yard. The median home value in this area is $518K, making it one of the more expensive areas near downtown Portland but not as pricey as Goose Hollow or King’s Hill. Other amenities include:

Columbia Park Portland

Columbia Park & Annex a park with a great view of Mt. Hood from the river trail running through it. There is also an off-leash area for dogs to play. It offers large open spaces, paths along the waterfront, and playgrounds and restrooms nearby. Metro Council has recognized the park because of its unique landscape design that allows visitors to enjoy stunning views while not obstructing them at all times throughout their walk or jog around this neighborhood green space in East Columbia Neighborhood, Portland, Oregon. You can catch some live concerts on Saturday nights during the summer months! This makes for a perfect place to spend time with your family members, including kids since there are quite a few activities for them to enjoy here.

 

The Grotto Portland

The Grotto – Catholic shrine and gardens are open to the public year-round. It’s located in Northeast Portland, Oregon, and admission is free; however, donations are accepted. There is also a gift shop on site. The Grotto features beautiful gardens with ponds, streams, waterfalls, and walking paths. It’s worth it to take some time out of your day to visit this place if you appreciate nature as well as religious art and architecture. One of my favorite things about this spot is that every season brings something new and unique to see!

 

Eastbank Esplanade Portland

Eastbank Esplanade – Right alongside the Willamette River sits this lovely esplanade which offers stunning views of downtown Portland, Oregon. It’s a perfect place for a walk, run, or bike ride and is pet-friendly. Several restaurants and cafes are located close by should you need to take a break from all the activity. The esplanade is home to several festivals and events throughout the year, so there’s always something new to check out!

History of Cully Neighborhood

The Cully neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, is a historically African American community that has been in existence for more than 100 years. The area was first populated by Jewish and German immigrants before the 19th century. In 1910, this primarily Caucasian population began to move away from North Albina Avenue because they were concerned with crime and poverty levels on the street at that time. They instead relocated into other parts of Portland or moved out of the state entirely. After the 1940s, many black families settled in North Albina Avenue while European immigrants moved elsewhere throughout the city.

In the mid-1920s, Portland’s Columbia Slough flooded and caused several deaths. In response to this tragedy, Congress authorized federal funds for flood control in 1934 that transformed the slough into a more sustainable waterway. During World War II, the creation of Interstate Avenue also helped many local businesses succeed because it gave them access to national markets by connecting downtown with railways on either side of the river. Portland later annexed Cully after reaching complete build-out between 1940 and 1960.

The neighborhood is currently thriving due to its strong schools, public parks, family-friendly amenities, including outdoor activities along Johnson Creek Boulevard, and other cultural attractions such as museums and sports facilities within proximity of one another. In addition to parks, there are plenty of sidewalks throughout the community, making it easy and safe to walk around. – Saturday Farmers Market: Saturdays, May through October at the Cully Central Park. The market features over thirty vendors selling produce and flowers with live music throughout the season.

Kunamokwst Park Portland

Kʰunamokwst Park: Kʰunamokwst Park is a Native American park located in the Cully Neighborhood. The park has a playground, basketball courts, and plenty of open space for picnics or just taking a break from city life. Kʰunamokwst means “place of the eagles” in Chinook Wawa, the local Native American language.

 

Portland Japanese Garden

Portland Japanese Garden: The Portland Japanese Garden is a beautiful and tranquil garden located in the West Hills of Portland. The garden comprises five different gardens, each with its unique theme. Visitors can enjoy walking through the gardens, taking in the views, or sitting on one of the many benches for a break.

 

Oregon Zoo Portland

Creston-Kenilworth Neighborhood is a community in North Portland, Oregon. It comprises primarily single-family residences and duplexes with apartment-style units built to accommodate many young professionals seeking out this neighborhood for its proximity to downtown and access to public transportation. The Creston-Kenilworth Neighborhood Association has been working hard over the last few years to improve safety through increasing street lighting, adding surveillance cameras at critical intersections, hiring private security patrols, and organizing block watches.

The increased visibility and security have contributed to the increasing appeal of this community. Many people choose Creston-Kenilworth Neighborhood because it offers lower housing costs than nearby neighborhoods like Irvington or Hawthorne while maintaining a desirable location close to downtown Portland. Some residents value its affordability so much that they often stay in their homes for years despite having opportunities to purchase more expensive houses elsewhere.

The only downside is that there isn’t very much retail activity around here; however, anyone who works downtown can easily access shopping by taking one of the many buses that run up and down Martin Luther King Boulevard every day. While these public transportation options are convenient, some locals find them overcrowded when traveling during rush hour times, making getting across town quite a bit more complicated. However, Creston-Kenilworth is a quiet and serene place to live with very little crime.
